I'm in the process of setting up a 150g reef tank. I have the Aqueon 4 refugium and am wondering about the AquaMaxx Cone 2 protein skimmer. I'd like to know your opinions on it or suggestions for another protein skimmer that would be better.

I've also discovered AquaC Evo 180 and Avast Marine has a nice DIY package. Any thoughts or opinions on any or all of these would be appreciated.

Well I just saw your thread and im sure you have made a decision by now but my brother used aquamaxx, not sure which model, but he went through two pumps in a 5-6way month spand. I purchased the cone 2 prior to his issues and I have not ran mine yet since my 180tank is not finahed yet. If I have issues with mine ill buy a Vertex Protein Skimmer as the crew from Sam speaks highly of the unit

Actually I have not decided yet. I know this project is taking a long time, but I am in no rush and want to do it right. However, I am leaning more towards the AquaC Evo 180. I'll probably run a Mag-7 pump with it.

Thanks Dog, but I really like the AquaC Evo-180. So far, and I haven't gotten it yet, it's my choice. I'd like to hear some more opinions on these skimmers.

This is the same a s the JNS sk2 skimmer just rebranded aquamaxx cone 2.

It is a great skimmer. The regular AM line uses sedra pumps the cone line uses sicce pumps.

The jns sk2/aquamaxx cone 2 is one of the best balanced skimmers out for your money.
Very quiet and built very well. you will be pleased with the purchase of it.

They were a good skimmer, nearly 10 years ago... The newer skimmers on the market, with more efficient pumps, better needle wheels, and updated designs, will be far better and for similar or less money.

The aquamaxx would be good, so would one of the Octopus Extreme or Super Reef Octopus skimmers.
