Skimmer less Nanos

I am currently running a 5.1 gal nano which is skimmerless.

No problems I should note that I keep a strict 2x a week 50%ish water change schedule as I am not running any type of skimmer or mechanical filtration.

Im going to be doing a 20g nano and am thinking about going skimmerless, atleast for awhile until i get stocked. Ill maintain a 20-25% water change weekly.

I've been thinking about running my 34 gallon Solana without the Skimmer...

Whats the thoughts on this? I do plan on running a 9 watt U/V though...

Im not entirely sure. I think tanks with higher water volume a skimmer would be much more beneifical. Also majorly depends on your bioload as well. Its hard to say honestly and for somebody new like myself its even more confusing lol

I think on small systems with regular water changes skimmerless is fine.

Im going on the assumption that we are thinking about what we are stocking, our feeding regimen, and when we do our water changes.

With the normal changes and a good bio filter (LR and LS) the water for the animals should stay replenished with trace and low nutrient levels.

Kdaddy - I think a solana starts to push the envelope for size as water changes of the same volume begin to get more tedious. A 34gal also pushes the envelope of the density of the livestock. I used to run a Tunze nano doc when I had my solana running and it did pull quite a bit.

What model is the Tunze nano doc you used? Did it fit right in the back of the Solana ??? PM me if you'd like...

Nuvo 8g, 30 days, undetectable ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, or phosphates. Weekly 1.6g water changes take about ten minutes using NSW. Filtration is Rite-Size -> 100 micron pad -> ChemiPure Elite -> PhosBan -> ChemiPure. Rite-Size and filter pad are changed every couple of days. Total time spent a week on maintenance is about 20 minutes. Adding a fuge/sump or hang on tank skimmer would be the only way to add a skimmer. That would increase workload IMO.

Kdaddy : I used this model Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer 9002 in my Solana. It did not fit in the back chamber. and the front of the tank is more stable water level wise than the back is so skimming works more efficiently.

I would use this model had it been out at the same time I had my Solana.

Tunze Comline DOC Protein Skimmer 9004

Did you have to mod it or the solana to fit the 9002 to fit it in to work ?

25 gallon top down tank running skimmer less for about 6 months now. Tank is doing perfectly!

with the smaller tanks say 10 gallon and fewer, i have read many articles that speak of no less than 50% water changes or more on a weekly basis, some suggest 100%.
