The Decision......LED and a rant

So I mde my decision and I wanted to thank everyone who gave me input. I ended up going with two. I have 2 tanks and decided to convert both.

#1 I was able to purchase a used Reefbreeders light from Pauliewalnuts for a very fair price. It was great to meet him and I hope to see his tank soon.

#2 Despite nobody recommending it, I bought the 22" SeaLife from The Coral Reef LLC. I did this for 2 main reasons. First of all I wantedd to support a LFS. From my past experience I know what a tough business it is. We're lucky to have such knowledgable people to help guide us through this hobby. Yes I could have got another Reefbreeders for $100 less. I'm not an expert but I know the lights are very similar. I didn't pay an extra $100 so I'd have a better light. I paid it to support a local business, I paid it for all the time that they spent answering all my coral questions, I paid it because I know I'll have more questions for them every time I enter their store and I paid it because they just did a really great thing by donating a system to a CT school. So that was my way of chipping in. I don't expect people not to buy things online or from the super stores. I just ask the next time you order that chemical, piece of coral or test kit, if saving a few dollars on your purchase is worth the chance of your local pet store having to close.

This is close to my heart as I've watched my father's pet stores dwindle from 3 to 2 to 1. The only one left is on it's last leg, opened in 1976, and is one of the few full-line mom & pop pet stores left in CT. With a Canadian chain opening a store on Nov. 1st a mile down the street from us I can't imagine the store lasting much past Christmas. The store is old and falling apart. We have about 20% of the fish we had just 6 years ago. The racks have rusted through. In the last 7 years we've seen our business float to Wal-Mart that opened across the street, Petco 2 towns away, Tractor Supply who opened this summer. There hasn't been any money made to put back into the stores. The pet business has been a huge part of my life. I always figured I would have inherited the 3 stores. I hope the last one can overcome, but with PetValu opening I can't see how we could survive even a 5% drop in sales. The age of little Mom and Pop pet stores is coming to an end. Replaced by mostly giants. I am grateful for The Coral Reef, Headie Corals, Exotic Fish & Coral and the others as they are becoming the new Mom and Pop pet shops. They figured out that they can't compete in the general pet supply business and have found a way to keep the mom and pop spirit alive in their specialty stores. Please support them so they can stay for a long time, provide for their families and donate to our schools.

Wow this was incredibly sad to read. I'm sorry. I hate big business. Walmart is the worst thing to happen to America. Yet we all want to save money and be able to buy anything 24 hours a day so we give in and go. And this is how the middle class was destroyed. Makes me ******* sick!

Definately support your lfs. I almost died when puppy center closed since it was so close to my house. The coral reef and exotic fish and corals are amazing stores lets make sure we keep these open by supporting them.

Nice write up. If you get a chance to do some of the same corals under each you should post a picture comparison.

You guys definitely should have kept the Middletown store open and ditched the other two. Then expanded the salt. Of course I guess when you closed the other two there was that aquarium only store on Newfield St. I can't even remember the name of it now, but I remember the guy being kind of a jerk most of the time. There's nothing in Middletown afaik.

Speaking of supporting lfs. The coral reef just got an ausie shipment in tons of orange torches and hammers go check it out

#1 Sealife LED. Honestly the next day after putting it on felt like all my corals doubled in size. I know they didn't, but I had no idea my frogspawn and hammer could extend so far. I had to reaarange to make sure peace was kept. Zoas I had bought 5 days before that never seemed to open, awoke from the dead. It made an amazing difference. Before I had a 24" Coralife fixture with 2 T5's. 3 month old bulbs.

#2 The store was/is Guppies to Puppies. We never did much salt. Middletown and Cromwell held on as long as they could. To be honest there are many reasons why they came to the sate that's left. The Wal-Mart's, Petco's and online stores certainly killed many local pet stores. The other thing that changed was children. They stopeed asking Santa for fish tanks, hamsters and geckos and started asking for IPAD's and Playstations. Maybe the store would still have a chance if someone put in 50 grand with a remodel etc but I'd rather put 50 grand on one hand of black jack. The odds are better. The ammount of stores that have closed in the last 10 years in CT is incredible.

I have a Sealife LED on my tank and I love it. I have the 16 in model. I think yours is a 24 in model as they don't come in 22 in though...... You are going to love that light. I have been getting great growth from mine. As long as your water levels are stable you can't go wrong with that setup.

No it's a 22". I think it still says 24" on their site but when you go in they tell you it's now 22". The 22" has same lights as a 16" just more spread out.

29 BC. It's actually to big. The tank is 21.8". I can't hang it and legs are too big so I have it resting on some wood till I can figure out a fix.

And yes, they got an Aussie Orange wall hammer. Kris was here last night and was showing me some of the awesome pieces that came in, worth a stop for sure.

That thing is insane franky. I wish tcr was closer to me. I would do so much more business with them if they were close. It's just not worth the maybe they have something I want when it's over a hour away. To go that far I like to be able to buy a few cool items.
