Vertex Omega 150 break in question

Guys I just received my Omega 150 and I have had it running in 8" with the top off and the riser pipe in the closed position where water is not coming out of it or at least this is the way I read the directions. It has been running 24 hours. This evening I put the top on and it's still over flowing so I am going to take the top back off and let it overflow longer. My question is how long should I let it run without the top? Also the wedge pipe it is suppose to be closed forcing the water to overflow right? Read through this thread and saw my answer but I need assurance. Thanks for the help Omega 150 users!

I am replacing a Reef Octopus.

I would run it with the top on, but the plug removed so it pours into the sump.
You should run the wedge pipe so that it is full open.

Most skimmers can be broken in by running it in a vinegar bath for about 5 hrs. This will remove all residues from the unit and oils. It will be just like a cleaned skimmer. I have never had a break in period using this method. I run it full blast in a Rubbermaid container with fresh water and vinegar.

Yeah I got over zealous and put it in my sump. Too late to take it out. Have to go to work. It has been running 24 plus hours now...

I'm in the same situation. My 24hr period ended a few hours ago. I put the back on and it overflowed enough to fill the collection cup. I removed the effluent and now the bubbles at the top are more thick and frothy.

You removed the effluent? Do you mean you plugged the drain hose? Are you able to dial your skimmer down by adjusting the stand pipe? I won't be able to test mine out until this evening.

Spoke to Jeremy today at PA. Prior to talking to him, my wedge pipe was all the way open and is still over flowing. Should I decrease the depth of water that it is in? He said there was no need for a vinegar bath etc...

Sounds like that might help. My wedge pipe is open all the way too. It's calmed down a lot since yesterday.

Never had a skimmer over flow after doing the vinegar bath. Put it together, run it in a Rubbermaid storage sump thingy plugged in and let it run for about 5 hrs. Re rinse, then connect to sump.

Well it's been a couple of days. I will play with the depth. I am sure it's too late for the vinegar bath to make a difference right? It's overflowing but the bubble are creating a foam head.

i have mine running in 7.5 inches of water and its doing great.your bubbles are way to big going into the neck,,either make your sump depth a little shallower or reduce the amount of air with the white flange on the skimmer pump

I am happy to report I decreased my sump depth. It's in about 6" of water and it's running great. There was a video on YouTube where I guy named Clifford was running his in 5" of water and it ran great and he also stated that these skimmers run well in 5-6.5" of water. Needless to say, Thank you for the replies and I am enjoying this skimmer!

its been about 4 weeks now and I am Still having serious issues with the Skimmer, First ill say over the past three years I have used two other skimmers and never have Ii had the issues I am having with the Omega.

Okay so I finally thought I had it figured out and dialed in, its been skimming OK not great but OK for over a week now, last night when I checked on it as I do everyday i noticed it has stopped skimming what I mean by that is the bubble level had dropped way down to about 8" below the cup, nothing had changed in the sump water level was right on its mark. so I adjusted the riser on the skimmer to get it to skim, this morning I wake up to a flooded room, the 2.5 gal bucket that the skimmer skims into had over filled by about 5 gal of RO.

as I said my passed skimmers once set staid set!

why does the omega not stay set?
what was I supposed to do if it stops skimming?

I really am feeling like I need to make sure the community knows to be aware of the problems we are having with this skimmer,

5 or 24 hours for a vinegar bath for a new Omega 150

5 or 24 hours for a vinegar bath for a new Omega 150

Hi,

I just started running my new omega 150 skimmer (with the collection cup off and wedge completely closed) in 8 inches of water and vinegar. I added about 1/2 gallon of vinegar for 20 gallons of water in a large rubbermaid container. How long should I run it in the vinegar bath? I'm planning to upgrade from a 60 rimless to a 120g Oceanic tech this Sunday (replacing an SCA 303 skimmer, which works great but the Atman 2500 pumps seem to go out every 6-12 months, even with regular maintenance). 4 pumps in 4 years doesn't seem right.

I'm hopeful that the Omega 150 is solid. Looks like amazing build quality. The only PITA is attaching the riser plate for the pump itself. Takes some finesse to get the lock nuts to attach to the titanium screws. Also, the collection cup top will pop off when removed from the shipping box. Fortunately, I was on carpet when it landed on the ground.
