Crocea clams are the most common and will stay quite tiny, I doubt they will grow longer than 6"

T5s are "dicey" only if you have a low quality T5 system.
Most systems nowadays have great reflectors built into them with a super efficient and strong ballast for high output. How long is your tank? My general rule of thumb is, the clam cannot be deeper than your bulb length.

Are there any pars that you can provide on what these clams need instead of the type of lighting?

My tank is 12" tall, I have no intention of keeping a clam in the short term but I can't rule out the possibility sometime down the road. Would 4x24w T5 be sufficient for a crocea or maxima? I would probably go with the following bulb configuration:
- ATI Sun Pro
- ATI Aquablue or Blue Plus
- ATI Blue Plus
- UVL Super Actinic
I don't really have to put the clam at the bottom, but I don't want them to just barely make it with the lighting either

I currently have a approximately 18" giga at the bottom of my 110g tank (30in high). The lighting is 4x110w VHO, two 10k, 1 true actinic, 1 actinic combo of some kind. I have only had him about a week. He opens up fully, looks great, secretes what looks like mucus (heard this is OK) with some excrement like particles in it, and generally seems healthy. He is on the bottom of the tank though, so I am wondering whether the light is really enough, or whether over time he will slowly starve due to lack of light. Please let me know what you think.

here is an update, after 4.5 weeks under 440W vho at over 24" depth, with Calcium over 420 I have 5mm new growth. looks like this is a good setup for the Gigas
you have an answer in the other posts about this question. the majority opinion is no. the majority is correct. if you want a different answer, just to satisfy yourself, then just ignore what's been said in the tridacnid posts already and buy the tank. 2 55 w t-5's are not enough! and how they are 55 watt is a bit odd to me, as on a 65 gal 36"tank t-5's are 39 watts. the one you speak of is 36 gals?

I've had my maxima under a 4x24 for about six months now. He's 14" below the surface, seems very healthy and growing very fast. It's a fan-cooled TEK with good bulbs.
The aforementioned Maxima appears to be thriving under about 225.

okay I've read this entire thread. I am interested in a crocea for my 30gal. Still a bit confused about the T-5 issue that seems to be going back and forth.
depth to sandbed is 14"
light is a Nova Extreme SLR T-5 30" 48 watt
I do not own a PAR meter so can't provide a reading at SB
Is this possible? If not would a 70watt viper added to the above spotlighted on clam work?

the clam will be a little above the sand and hopefully, you will move it up on your rocks after a couple days. if possible get a better t5 fixture and sell this one. it's a better solution than the viper. they do make a 4 bulb for a 30 gal tank

Will Maximas do alright under the newer more powerful LEDs like the AI and Vertexs?
